What does a DEXA scan measure?
DEXA stands for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. The scanner uses two X-ray energy levels and software to distinguish measured tissue compartments. A whole-body composition report usually separates estimated fat mass, lean soft tissue and bone mineral content. Those labels describe different parts of the measurement; they are not three independent scores for your health.
Lean soft tissue includes water and organs as well as muscle. Bone mineral content is the measured mineral component, not the weight of your entire skeleton. Body fat percentage expresses fat relative to the mass used in that report’s calculation. Read the label and units before comparing it with a number from another device.
Some reports also divide the body into regions or include an estimate of visceral fat. The available measurements depend on the scanner and software. A regional measurement does not, by itself, explain why one side differs or establish what you should change. Keep the full report so its definitions remain beside the numbers.

Body composition and bone density are different appointments
A diagnostic bone density examination commonly measures the hip and lumbar spine. It supports a clinical assessment of bone health. A whole-body composition appointment focuses on fat, lean tissue and mineral compartments. The technology can overlap, but the scan protocol, analysis and reporting purpose differ.
This distinction matters when booking. A body composition report can contain a bone value without being the diagnostic examination your doctor requested. Give the clinic the exact wording on a referral, rather than selecting the cheapest appointment with DEXA in its name. Ask whether a separate diagnostic booking is needed.
If your question is about osteoporosis or a concerning bone result, take the report to your GP. A website cannot decide which examination is appropriate from an isolated number. The referring practitioner and clinic can match the examination to the question and explain who will receive the report.
What happens at the appointment?
You usually lie on a padded table while a scanner arm passes over the area being measured. The operator positions you and asks you to remain still. For diagnostic hip or spine imaging, supports may be used to hold the required position. Ask the clinic how long to allow for the whole visit, including registration and any discussion afterwards.
Follow the preparation instructions for your particular appointment. Tell the clinic in advance if you could be pregnant, have recently had contrast imaging, or have implants that may affect the examination. Clothing with metal may interfere with the scan, so ask what to wear and whether you will change into a gown.
Before leaving, check how and when you will get your report. An appointment described as scan-only may have a different explanation process from a scan with a consultation. Ask who you can contact if a label is unclear. You can write down these questions before the visit instead of trying to remember them while looking at a new report.

How much radiation is involved?
DEXA uses ionising radiation, although the dose is low. For bone densitometry, RadiologyInfo describes a dose below one-tenth of a standard chest X-ray and below a day of natural background exposure. This comparison concerns that examination; it is not an exact dose promise for every scanner or whole-body protocol.
The dose varies with equipment and the examination. Ask the clinic about the protocol it will use if you want a comparison that applies to your booking. Low dose does not make repeated testing useful by default. The reason for a scan and what the result might change are still worth discussing before arranging it.

What does a DEXA scan cost in Australia?
Published initial body composition appointments in our selected cost sample range from $79 to $185, checked through 2026-10-20. The sample includes published fees from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and the Gold Coast. Unpublished fees are excluded. This is not an Australian average or a complete market range.
The comparison separates an initial appointment from a follow-up, Sunday booking, consultation or multi-scan package. These offers do not buy identical services. A lower scan-only fee may not include the discussion you expected, and an arranged referral may be charged separately. Check the total amount before you pay.

If a fee is not published, request a quote for the exact examination rather than borrowing a figure from another branch or city.
Is a DEXA scan covered by Medicare?
Australian Medicare bone densitometry items apply to diagnostic examinations under specified clinical criteria. They do not provide an item for a general body composition booking. Having a referral and meeting rebate criteria are separate questions, and an eligible examination does not automatically mean the clinic bulk bills. Ask the provider to confirm eligibility, the amount payable and any repeat-test conditions before your appointment. Who tends to book one?
People arrive with different questions. A doctor may request diagnostic bone density as part of an assessment. A body composition appointment may be discussed in nutrition, training or clinical care. The useful starting point is the decision the information would help you make, not whether someone else has recently had a scan.
For athletes, the Australian Institute of Sport places DXA assessment within a considered process, including consent, appropriate communication and consistent testing. A body composition result is only part of a performance picture. An online percentile cannot choose a target, training programme or nutrition plan for an individual.
Before a repeat scan, discuss what you hope to learn and whether the interval can answer that question. The scanner, preparation and analysis matter when comparing visits. Keep previous reports and the circumstances of each test together. There is no universal appointment schedule that follows from a body fat percentage alone.

How do you read the results?
Start with the examination name, scanner and date. Then read the measurement, units and reference notes together. A mass in kilograms is different from a percentage or a score. Check whether a value describes the whole body, one limb or another region before comparing it with a table.

A percentile locates a value within a reference distribution; it does not define a personal health target. If the report seems inconsistent, ask the clinic to explain its calculation and reference database.
Bring the full report to the practitioner who is helping you use it. Ask what the finding adds, whether it changes the next step and whether a future comparison would be useful.
