The same technology can be used for different tests.
A whole-body composition scan estimates fat mass, lean soft tissue and bone mineral across the body and its regions. A diagnostic bone density examination usually measures the hip and lumbar spine to help a doctor assess bone health.
Seeing a bone measurement on a body composition report does not mean you have received the diagnostic examination your doctor needs. Check the scan sites, protocol and report conclusion.

Compare the purpose and report
| Question | Body composition | Diagnostic bone density |
|---|---|---|
| What is the main purpose? | Estimate fat, lean tissue and bone mineral, including regional distribution. | Assess bone mineral density at appropriate diagnostic sites. |
| Which measurements might appear? | Fat mass, body fat percentage, lean tissue and bone mineral content. Additional estimates depend on the system. | Bone mineral density with relevant reference comparisons and a clinical report. |
| Who should explain it? | The practitioner providing the scan and results discussion. | Your referring doctor or treating clinician, using the imaging report and your history. |
| Does one replace the other? | No. A whole-body report does not replace a requested diagnostic assessment. | A hip and spine examination does not automatically provide a whole-body composition report. |
What if my report includes a T-score?
The measurement site and the person’s age and clinical context matter. A score printed on a whole-body report should not be treated as interchangeable with a diagnostic hip or spine result.
Take a flagged bone finding to your GP. Ask what examination was performed and whether any further assessment is appropriate. This comparison does not diagnose osteoporosis or recommend a rescan interval.
Before you book
Tell the clinic whether your question concerns body composition or a medical bone health assessment. If you have a referral, use its requested examination when booking. Check the total price and who receives the report.
