DEXA is used for two different purposes: body composition and diagnostic bone density. A price for one does not tell you what the other costs. A total-body composition appointment may include an explanation, while a diagnostic bone density service has a different reporting process.
The prices below are examples from providers’ own pages. The provider price pages were checked through 2026-10-20. This is a small, selected sample, not an Australian average, complete directory or ranking. Sunday appointments, follow-ups, multi-scan packages and combined examinations are labelled separately.

What can change the total price?
Ask what is included in the quoted appointment. A short explanation of the report, a written calorie report and a longer dietitian consultation are different services. Check whether there is a separate fee for a referral, additional reporting or discussing the results after you receive them.
If you are comparing a package with a single appointment, check how many scans it includes, any expiry date and whether the appointments must be used by the same person. A lower per-scan price is only useful if each scan has a reason and the package terms suit you.

Medicare and private health are separate questions
Some diagnostic bone density examinations qualify for a Medicare benefit under specific item conditions. The six items in our Medicare guide do not fund a body composition scan booked simply to track training or fat mass.
Ask the clinic and your fund about the exact service before assuming private health cover applies. A consultation may be treated differently from the scan itself. Do not subtract an advertised rebate from a quote until eligibility and billing are confirmed.

We use an identifiable provider’s own public price or service page. Each row names the provider and links to the source. A confirmed service without a public price is shown as quote required. We do not fill the gap with prices from a different city or from a bioimpedance scan.

Once you have chosen an appointment, ask the clinic for preparation instructions. Tell it whether this is your first scan or a comparison with another report. A useful booking is one that answers your question and gives you a clear route to discussing the result.

What is the cheapest DEXA scan in Australia?
We have not surveyed every provider and do not claim a national cheapest price. The table shows dated examples with different inclusions. Compare the final quote, referral costs and explanation of results.
Are all listed providers partners?
No. STRIVE is the confirmed lead partner. Other providers are independent price references and are labelled accordingly.
Is a bone density scan the same price as body composition?
Not necessarily. They are different examinations with different reporting and eligibility requirements. Ask for a quote for the specific service you need.
