Start with the appointment, not the headline price.
STRIVE in Alexandria, Sydney, currently lists an initial DEXA body composition scan at $149 and a follow-up for previous STRIVE DEXA clients at $99. Its service page describes a scan of about 20 minutes plus a results explanation. These are one provider’s published prices, not a national average.
A scan-only appointment, a scan with a results discussion and a full dietitian consultation are different services. Check which one you are comparing before choosing on price.

Does Medicare cover a DEXA scan?
Some diagnostic bone density scans attract a Medicare rebate when the relevant clinical and referral requirements are met. That does not establish coverage for a body composition appointment booked for fitness or tracking.
Ask your referring doctor and imaging provider whether your particular examination is eligible, what item applies and what you will pay. Do not subtract a bone density rebate from a body composition price.
Ask for the total cost before booking.
A useful quote tells you what happens before, during and after the scan.
- Is this body composition, diagnostic bone density, or both?
- Does the price include a report and someone explaining it?
- Is a referral needed, and is arranging it an extra cost?
- Is a dietitian consultation or RMR test a separate appointment?
- Do follow-up or package prices have eligibility, expiry or cancellation conditions?
